SUDS Radio Plays: Info Night

SUDS is putting on a new initiative this semester: radio plays!

Are you interested but want to know more about what this project entails and what opportunities it offers? Come along to our info night this Friday! We will be explaining the process, addressing some FAQs, and also answering any on the spot questions. Even if you’re just a little bit intrigued, come along!

This project offers the opportunity to get involved as a writer, director, actor or sound designer. Our writer’s callout has already closed, but for those who signed up, this will be a valuable opportunity to clarify any questions you have going forward with your scripts. For people interested in directing and acting, will we also be explaining that process and notifying you of when those callouts will be up. These callouts will be based on a first come first served selection process, so you won’t want to miss out on that info! We will also talk about the opportunities for sound designers, and the option to have them as an extra team member should directors need them. And of course, we will be giving some simple technical guidance for the process of recording and editing a radio play.

If you’d like to submit a question ahead of time, do so here!

Joan Didion is a journalist, social theorist and author, and when her only daughter Quintana died in 2005 she adapted her memoir about the death of her husband into this play: the Year of Magical Thinking. What results is an emotive and intellectual reflection on life, death, love, and family. In a three-person version of this one-woman-play, SUDS’ Year of Magical Thinking is a thoughtful and creative journey into the multi-faceted character of 'Joan' and the concept of grief itself.

This story starts on the first anniversary of their father’s death and follows their process of grief faced in quiet solitude. From one night stands to exam stress and unresolved regrets, it is a play full of memories, dreams and original music. ‘Tell Me Things’ is experimental, queer and visceral.

In 1964, four young friends from Liverpool unexpectedly skyrocketed to international stardom. Something strange had taken hold of the world, and it was called Beatlemania. For a short time, it seemed they were invincible. Invincible, that is, until one of them was murdered by a lone gunman who claimed to have heard the voice of God … A play about grief, friendship, fame, and the strange light behind a killer’s eyes.

A writer’s short stories bear an eerie resemblance to a couple of child murders that have taken place in a totalitarian state. Irish playwright Martin McDonagh combines black comedy and gothic thriller as he explores how trauma shapes us and the deadly importance of storytelling.
