Membership

how do i join?

Rock up to one of our General Meetings, held every two weeks during semester! The schedule is right here. Make sure you’ve already gotten your free USU membership here. Once you’ve signed up, you're officially a member of our society and entitled to have a say in the decisions we make; no need to audition to become a member!

Be sure to sign up at least a week before any General Meetings you’d like to vote at — you have to have been a member for at least a week to be eligible to vote! Being a member is a great way to meet people, to see and make exciting new theatre, and to be kept up to date with all our auditions and production role openings.

If you can’t catch us in person, you can sign up online at sudsusydmembership.getqpay.com.

What memberships are available?

There are two types of SUDS memberships: regular and gold.

Regular members pay a $5 sign-up fee and are eligible for $3 tickets to every show we put on, except for the Major.

Gold members pay a $25 sign-up fee and get to see every SUDS show for free, except the Major.

How do i get involved in shows?

Wanna act in or be on the production team for a SUDS show? Awesome!

Like our Facebook page to keep up to date on audition and production callouts, and join our Facebook group to hear from other members about exciting theatre opportunities in and out of SUDS.

What can I expect from an audition / production interview?

First, take a deep breath and remember we’re all just uni students like you! Auditions and interviews vary from show to show, but for auditions you’ll generally have to prepare a short monologue. You might also be asked to do a ‘cold read’, or to read aloud from a script the team will give you on the spot.

Production interviews will usually involve a casual, informal chat about your experience (you don’t need to have any!), and any ideas you might have for the show. For more creative roles, it’s a good idea to brainstorm some ideas in advance.

The Facebook events for auditions and production callouts will include any specifics you need to be aware of. If you have any questions, send an email to the address provided in the event!

Our kind of theatre

what kind of theatre do you make?

The short answer? All kinds.

Our annual in-semester season is comprised of twelve regular shows (or ‘slots’) which run for two weeks and are typically performed in our Cellar Theatre. A slot can be one play, ten plays, or 168 hours of uninterrupted improvisation (true story); if you vote for it, we do it. All SUDS members are welcome to pitch their idea for a slot, and vote on these pitches. As a society, we choose the year’s program! Take a look at some of our past productions here.

how does this pitching and voting thing work?

SUDS is a democracy, so all decisions are voted upon at General Meetings. If you want to use the space for a slot, you're required to make a pitch to the society. Don’t worry, though; it doesn’t have to be formal, and can take whatever form you like! You just need to speak to the membership and have them hear you out. After that we put it to a confidential vote.

If there is only one show pitching for a slot, it comes down to a vote of confidence (yes/no/abstain). If there are multiple pitches, we break out the paper slips and have a preferential vote. Once votes are counted, the decision is final: the pitch is officially part of our season and has a two-week run in the Cellar locked in. Yay!

The cellar theatre

What is the cellar?

Welcome to our home! The Cellar is the black box theatre space we use for rehearsals, social events, and shows, and is available for the society to use at all times. When someone successfully pitches for a slot they are granted use of the Cellar for the run of their show and rehearsals. If you’re not a slotholder and would like to use the space for a performance, you can approach the membership at our fortnightly General Meetings! Check out the schedule here.

how do i find it?

The Cellar can be found under the Refectory at the very bottom of the Holme Building on the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus. Entry is via Science Road.

If you’d like to know more about the Cellar space, send an email to sudsthewash@gmail.com.
