Trial - Workshop Day

Wednesday February 11, 10am - 5pm

Description

Trial delves into the trauma a prisoner goes through before he is put to death. A tale of love, guilt, pain and, perhaps, eventual peace. The play has 3 main characters; a youth named Adam in his early 20s, his lover Nicole, and Jerry, a fellow prisoner. The play follows Adam’s arrest, his days in prison, and his last moments before he hears the guard’s call, “Do you have any last wishes?”

The Workshop

The format of Trial has changed! We are now holding a day long workshop on Thursday Feb 11, an opportunity for actors to experience this original script and to help in its development. The day will entail a script read through, active workshopping of scenes, exercises in character building, discussion of the text with the actors, and hopefully a final actioned read through.

Roles Available

  • Adam: (he/him pronouns) in his early 20s, a first time murderer dealing with deep regret and existential fear

  • Nicole: (she/her pronouns) Adam’s lover, unaware of Adam's past until he is arrested

  • Jerry: (he/him pronouns) a fellow prisoner who tries to console Adam

  • Lisa: (she/her pronouns) Nicole’s friend

Apply

Please apply here before 5pm on Wednesday Feb 3 to be considered for the day:

SUDS Production Callout: MY MUM DIED AND I WANNA SING ABOUT IT

A Musical Cabaret

22 - 24th February 2021

Written, directed and featuring Jack Francis West

Musical direction by Jess Snelleman

Produced by Jacob Parker

MY MUM DIED AND I WANNA SING ABOUT IT is a one man comedy shit-show that was cheaper to write than going to therapy. Featuring music from some of your favourite musicals and artists (and a few niche ones that you’ll get excited about when you recognise them).

In combining comedy, tragedy and general stream of consciousness it’s an exploration of the realisations and experiences surrounding death, parents and grief (and life, and trauma, and sex, theatre, capitalism, anxiety, depression, dental hygienistry, shitting yourself while standing up, being gay, being stupid and most importantly - being dead).

Content Warnings:

  • Death

  • References to Cancer

  • References to Mental Health issues

  • Sexual references

This cabaret is asking how we talk about grief, loss and death, and more importantly, why we don’t.

AVAILABLE POSITIONS:

  • Lighting Designer

  • Sound Designer

  • Stage Manager

  • Videographer

  • Photographer

  • Production Assistant

APPLY HERE: https://forms.gle/ADtMyZYZXVX54caSA

And if there’s a position that you think you could be providing for the show that isn’t listed please apply.

SUDS Actor Callout: Dumb Kids - Script Development

Written by Jacob Parker

Directed by Sophia Bryant

Produced by Thomas Hanaee

DESCRIPTION

Let’s talk about sex baby.

It’s an oppressive Australian summer, ice poles are melting in the searing sun, and recurring dreams are haunting the kids of St. Sebastian’s. A video of a kiss goes viral, a teacher tries to help, and parents don’t listen. Everybody’s talking but nobody is speaking. It’s the Australian teenage experience, where the stakes are life and death.

This queer response to Wedekind’s Spring Awakening positions the dark drama in contemporary Australia, combining High School tropes with black comedy, to ask what don’t we talk about when we talk about sex?

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

We are looking for 14 actors who are willing to workshop and develop a draft script in a space and to explore the dramatic themes of the play. If you are an actor your insight will be invaluable to help refine the text. It is important to note this is not a devised work in the sense that actors are writing the work; they will be providing feedback on the existing script.

We highly encourage people with diverse experiences of sexuality to apply.

DEVELOPMENT DATES

Please note this is a range of dates for the development process and you will not be required for all of them; these will be confirmed closer towards development. Please also note two dates for read throughs which you will need to attend:

 DEVELOPMENT:

  • Monday, 18th January 2021 (10am-5pm).

  • Tuesday, 19th January 2021 (10am- 5pm).

  • Wednesday, 20th January 2021 (10am- 5pm).

  • Thursday, 21st January 2021 (10am- 5pm).

 READ THROUGHS:

  • Thursday, 21st January 2021 (6pm- 9pm).

  • Monday, 1st March 2021 (6pm-9pm)

CONTENT WARNINGS

Due to the dark nature of Wedekind’s Spring Awakening this play contains several content warnings. Please note the script contains following:

  • Depictions and references to Suicide.

  • Depictions and references to Rape, Sexual Assault and non-consensual encounters.

  • Depictions of Homophobia.

  • Depictions of Conversion Therapy.

  • Depictions of Mental Illness.

  • Depictions of Eating Disorders.

  • Depictions of Sex Scenes.

  • References to abortion.

  • Coarse language.

  • Smoking.

We remind potential applicants that this is a developmental space where we are aiming to confront and discuss these issues in a safe and constructive manner. The wellbeing of our participants is of the utmost importance and our team will do all we can to facilitate a creatively rewarding and safe collaborative environment.

APPLICATION LINK

Please complete the below form by 12pm, Friday 15th January to be considered for the development: https://forms.gle/YgX7Hi1LY7cQGP4M6

If you have any queries, please feel free to contact either Sophia (Director) or Thomas (Producer) at dumbkidsplay@gmail.com.

Production Callout: North Way

SUDS Production Callout: North Way

Lead Developer/Programmer: Eoin O'Sullivan
Music/Sound Developer: Jess Snelleman
Story Supervisor/Developer: Tom Hetherington-Welch

One morning in a small coastal town in Norway, the townsfolk awake to a rude realisation: they are all clones. With no knowledge of how this happened and with their individuality stripped from them, the people of North Way begin to fight and argue. Some will fight for peace, others for individuality, and others will search for answers in this sleepy town. A story of the search for a sense of self, and individuality.

Just because the story is about clones, that doesn't mean we want our designers to be the same! Please bring your unique perspective and individuality to your interview and the project, that is what we're looking for!

'North Way' is a development project which we are going to turn into a side scroller RPG video game in the style of Pixel Art. To achieve this, we need a team of eager designers! Below are the roles. There is potential to work across a number of these roles, especially in the visual design department.

ROLES AVAILABLE

  • Visual Artists / Graphic Designers:
    - Character Design: Townspeople, Monsters, Clones, Outsiders
    - Nature/environment: Hills, cliffs, mountains, clouds, Sun/Moon aura
    - Effects: Fog, movement/sweeps, breaking crates
    - Building/Architecture: Houses, temples, labs, shops, camps

  • Composers / Sound Designers:
    - Sound design: Everything from the player interacting with the environment, to ambient noise, sound effects etc.
    - Composers: Music and scoring, both event-specific and ambient game music.

  • Writers / Storytellers: We have a broad structure and three potential paths the story could go down: Dark, Neutral, and Light, we’d love to hear some of your broad strokes ideas as we plot out this sprawling story, and write for the characters which the protagonist will interact with.

  • Programmers and Assistants:
    - Mechanics
    - Game pathing
    - Small interactable mechanics

Model Callout: iMuse Fashion Show

SUDS Model Callout: iMuse Fashion Show

Mid February 2020
Headlined by Sarea Bhar

Contact us: sudsimuse@gmail.com

Interviews via Zoom only.

A muse is an external inspiration for a creative artist, but, iMuse is all about you, being your own inspiration. The clothes that we wear reflect our personality and our identity more than we will ever know. I want this fashion show to be people embracing their personality and it reflecting in their style. The fundamentals implemented in society that state clothing that is made for a certain section can only be worn by that section is absolutely beyond my understanding and I want to challenge it. I feel that we should not have to conform ourselves or categorise ourselves, which is why I want it to be completely gender fluid- think Harry Styles with his recent Vogue cover.

A traditional fashion show would make its models a simple clothes horse. iMuse is all about our models choosing the clothes that reflect their personality.

A traditional fashion show would make its model walk a certain way. iMuse is all about our models owning their ramp walk, whether it’s dancing, walking like a robot or running! Get creative and choose something that represents you.

Our fashion show needs wonderful and powerful people that will present themselves in the most authentic way possible! We want you to be unique with your pitches, iMuse should represent identity and be an attempt to break stereotypes.

Poet and swordsman Cyrano is in love with Roxane but feels that he’s not attractive enough for her. He agrees to help Christian win her heart by writing poems and letters to her. Intrigue, war, rivalry, insecurity, love and death all follow.

ROLES AVAILABLE

  • Cyrano de Bergerac: The play’s namesake and protagonist – a man of many talents, whose insecurities and doubts get in the way of his great love of Roxane. A brave and idealistic swordsman, he is a member of the Cadets of Gascoyne.

  • Roxane: Beautiful and intellectual, Roxane is beloved by all and the catalyst for much drama. She is kind, sincere and learns to appreciate the inner beauty of those around her.

  • Christian: Christian is handsome but lacks Cyrano’s wit and intellect. Despite being part of the company of cadets, in many ways, he is Cyrano’s opposite.

  • De Guiche: Powerful and rich, this married nobleman is also in love with Roxane and he tries to have Cyrano and Christian killed. The text’s “villain” is devious and deceitful but softens over the length of the play.

  • Ligniere: Christian’s friend, a drunkard, with many powerful enemies.

  • Leila Ragueneau: A pastry chef who sells his wares for poems. He later becomes Roxane’s porter.

  • Le Bret: Cyrano’s best friend, a fellow soldier and cadet. Le Bret worries for Cyrano.
