Meet your 2022 Executive
All throughout the year, we on the exec are decision-making, budgeting, scheduling, posting, drilling, socialising and archiving, all while procrastinating our studies to bring you quality student theatre.
Read on to find out more about those on our team, their roles, and their involvement in the society!
president: KIMMI TONKIN (she/her)
A little bit about me: Hello!! I’m kimmi, your resident meme queen with a resting b face (she’s got range). When I’m not finding any excuse to be on the pretty side of campus, I’ll be over in the Wilkinson building crying through my architecture degree. I’ve been a part of SUDS for the last 2 years, participating in 10 shows and I am truly so excited and grateful to be your president for 2022. Starting something is intimidating, but just know we’re all learning and not all actors!! There is so much to do around SUDS, whether that be costume, set, lighting or sound designs, and no, you don’t have to have any prior experience. I hope you’ll stick around to sit in our dark, dirty cellar, where it is here I’ve fallen back in love with drama and theatre.
What I do around SUDS: I’ve ‘worked’ primarily as an actress and costume designer, but I’ve dabbled in set, directing and sound!
vice president: Oliver durbidge (he/him)
A little bit about me: Hello! I’m Ollie, The VP for SUDS 2022. I’m the kamala harris of the group. I’ve been in suds since 2020, and it’s been my source of creativity, socialization and enjoyment throughout these dark covid times. I’m a film bro, going into my third year of film studies and visual art. Please follow my letterboxd account (Oliver Durbidge), and come chat to me so I can rant to you about how The Muppets (2011) and Speed Racer (2008) are the best movies of all time. And if you’re lucky I’ll talk to you about Son of The Mask (2005) as well. I love theatre, and want to be involved in as much of it as I can, and i’m so keen to oversee some incredible theatre at SUDS this year!
What i do around SUDS: Directing, Physical theatre, and acting!
treasurer: tilda wilkinson-finch (she/her)
A little bit about me: Heya, I’m Tilda, the 2022 treasurer! I’m majoring in Maths and Philosophy, and I love arguing, writing, reading, and trying to find the meaning of life in differential equations. I’m more often than not standing in front of a whiteboard somewhere, whether that’s in class, Fisher Library, or at home in my office. When I have time off I’ll be in a book under (or in) a tree. I’m always happy to have an esoteric chat, talk movies, complain about cafe tea, and/or recommend a dozen different science books.
What I do around SUDS: I am still a relative newby to SUDS, but I’ve done some acting and directing. My next big goal is to write a show!
secretary: Lily mcguinness (she/her)
A little bit about me: Lily here, your 2022 secretary! I first stepped into the dark depths of cellar theatre in early 2021, and I haven't left since. I’m studying criminology and nursing, because I like my uni readings dense and/or depressing. You can find me holed up on level 6 of Fisher Library because that's where they keep the true crime books. If I’m not there, I'm probably fueling my crippling caffeine addiction at Courtyard Cafe- come join me and we can talk obscure history facts and maybe (if we’re lucky) get you involved in the wonderful community that is SUDS.
What I do around SUDS: I’m a sucker for a color coded spreadsheet, so my main role in SUDS has been as a producer, but I’ve also done some acting and costume design.
Cellar Officer: sam hill-wade (he/him)
A little bit about me: Hello! I’m Sam, one of your resident cellar officers taking care of the wonderful cave we call home alongside the brilliant Adele Beaumont. I’m a directionless Arts student who has found a lovely home at SUDS in the past year, so I’m looking forward to making it the most inviting home possible for fellow wayward theatre kids in 2022! If I’m not feeding and watering myself in the Courtyard or loitering in the cellar, you’ll probably find me walking down science road between these two places. Come talk to me about anything Film and TV related, or any other strange topic that might pop into your head. I like to think I have opinions on everything (like a lanky Fran Lebowitz), and I’m always up for a coffee and a chat :)
What I do around SUDS: I’ve done some acting and directing at SUDS so feel free to throw any questions you had about auditions or pitches my way!
Cellar Officer: Adele beaumont (she/her)
A little bit about me: Hi!! I’m Adele, and I’ll be working with Sam as one of your lovely Cellar Officers for 2022!! No I am not the singer, but yes I can sing an off-key rendition of “Easy On Me” if you want. I am beginning my second year studying Nursing, so you know I am a sucker for unnaturally late work hours and never sitting down. You can find me either in Fisher sobbing into a Physiology textbook or in the Cellar fighting the resident Cellar ghost. I’m always up for a chat about Greek mythology, and you bet I can work out who your godly parent would be. SUDS has been a really great experience for me so far (Covid aside), and I hope that it will be just as much for you as well!
What I do around SUDS: I love trying literally anything theatre related. I have done 4 shows with SUDS doing a little bit of acting, costume, makeup, and directing. However I hope to do more lighting and sound moving into the future!
social secretary: Max danta (he/him)
A little bit about me: Hello my name is Max and I am a Labrador. This may seem like a metaphor, a zoomorphism if you will, but I am as close to a literal dog as a person can get. You may find me climbing trees or braving the musk of the Cellar depths while finishing an essay. I began at SUDS in 2020, a most difficult year to do this. In spite of the vid-co difficulty I found myself surrounded by friends and keen fore more, accidentally becoming prod assistant of a show at one point. I arrived not really knowing what I was doing but took part in everything I could, the way a puppy bumbles around lead from interesting smell to interesting smell. I am now social secretary, have done three plays and have met the best people I could’ve hoped to meet — follow your nose.
What I do around SUDS: I act. I am occasionally a prod assistant.
social secretary: Alex bryant (he/they)
A little bit about me: Hello! My name is Alex Bryant, I use he/ they pronouns, and I am one of the social secretaries for this year! This year I’m endeavouring as social secretary to create both a safe and welcoming space for everyone as well as creating a platform to amplify lesser heard voices in the suds community! I look forward to working with this incredible community to create a loving and caring theatre space for everyone.
What I do around SUDS: I have been involved in SUDS since 2019 as an actor, producer, stage manager and props maker! This year I look forward to exploring more roles and continue to facilitate other’s creativity!
publicity Officer: Daisy semmler (she/her)
A little bit about me: Well how do you do! Daisy here, I’m one of your publicity officers. Anything you see on this website, on our instagram, facebook, twitter, emails, ticket links… that’s all by myself and the wonderful Jim Bradshaw. SUDS is… how to describe… it’s a home to so many strange souls, and that’s why we love it. You will inevitably find me sipping a dirty iced chai from time to time in the courtyard, probably stressed about an essay or two (or three or four), but don’t be alarmed - diamonds are made under pressure and it’ll be any day now I magically transform into a priceless jewel, right before your eyes! Come and stress with me! Let’s savour it. Even better, let’s take that end of (and all of) semester stress and have a catharsis on the Cellar Theatre stage! I mean, that’s university showbiz baby.
What I do around SUDS: I’m what you might call a newbie to SUDS, I acted in the Year of Magical Thinking in 2021, I’m creating a crochet tapestry for SUDS studio, I’m also acting in Medea in 2022, and intend to direct! Maybe I’ll produce, maybe I’ll try my hand in some lighting or sound… the world is our oyster here in SUDS, so let’s get shucking, yeah?!
publicity Officer: Jim bradshaw (he/him)
A little bit about me: Hello hello! I’m Jim, one of your trusty publicity officers for 2022!! I’ll be handling all things world wide web alongside the ever-incredible Daisy Semmler. I’ve been around SUDS since 2020 and would be lying if I said I put more time into my studies than any of the shows I’ve been apart of. I’m a film major and musician (check out Finding Better Health on Spotify) with a deep love of the creative process, and look forward to humbly serving this wonderful society!
What I do around SUDS: I’ve been involved both on stage as an actor and backstage as a musical director/musician, writer and director. I’ll be assistant costume designing for Medea (our 2022 slot 2), and look forward to dipping my toes into all the other production roles I’ve yet to try out.
FESTIVALS OFFICER: Jennifer shin (she/her)
A little bit about me: Jen here! I’m a fourth ?? year ?? Secondary Education & History student and I’m refraining from talking about my obsession over my multiple blogs in case my students read this and think I’m uncool. I love sticking my finger in every pie, and SUDS has been the sweetest, most golden-crusted pie I’ve poked in a while. I’ve mainly been involved as a producer - my acting experiences ended with year 10 drama elective (may she rest in peace) and I hope it reminds newcomers that a passion for theatre extends to off-stage positions too!
What I do around SUDS: Other than producing and stage managing, I’ve made countless coffee runs; created way too many spreadsheets that I had to purchase extra Google Drive storage for; & pretended that I know what’s going on whenever the film majors talk about aspect ratios <3
archivist: Danny Yazdani (he/him)
A little bit about me: Good (morning/evening). This is your humble ar-chive-ist here, scouring through the dust and grime of our soon to be rejuvenated archives. Pending my fortnightly career crisis, I hope to be an English and Drama teacher and have loved learning from such perceptive SUDS members. When I’m hibernating away from the theatre, I love to wack on my gardening gloves, pick up a good book, or bust a move or two as I boogie to my 70s playlist.
What I do around SUDS: Being relatively new to SUDS, I have mostly dabbled in acting, but have written and directed also. I hope to do more backstage work soon! But the spotlight will inevitably find me...
