About the play

The play follows a group of university students playing netball in a casual uni league, who slowly begin to disappear as a masked killer appears within their ranks…

CONTENT WARNINGS: Blood, violence (stabbing, strangulation), bludgeoning, vomit, coarse language, loud noises, depiction of death on stage.

Characters

ANDIE (Goal Defence): Andie is a girl from the country moving to Sydney for university. She’s passionate about her science degree and joining activities at uni so her mum stops worrying about her being lonely. Matter of fact, logical, and reliable, she’s exactly what the netball team is looking for.

CATHY (Centre): Gentle and caring, Cathy is the heart of the team. A salve to Bridget’s abrupt personality, she’s constantly keeping the team calm.

BRIDGET (Goal Attack): Hypercompetitive and hypertalented, Bridget is the netball team’s captain. Still stinging from the hurt of her high school team’s championship loss, she will stop at nothing to win.

BEATRICE (Wing Attack) & TEAGAN (Wing Defence): These two roles are two close friends who are freakily attached at the hip, think the twins from The Shining if they were eerily perky netballers. The team's wing attack and defence, Beatrice and Teagan have always been there for each other- will the same be true by the end of the play?

STELLA (Goal Shooter): Melodramatic, with a problematic ankle to match, Stella is bubbly and always ready to go. Shooting her shot on and off the court, Stella is beloved by all of the team, even when she irritates them to death.

GEORGIA (Goal Keeper): Georgia is the stoic, yet still playful Goal Keeper of the team. She’s close with both Maddy, and with her counterpart in the goal end, Stella. Note: Georgia is a non-speaking role. We are looking for an expressive actor to bring her to life!

MADDY (Reserve): Combative and concerned about her position on the team when interloper Andie comes for her position on the court, one thing Maddy is sure to do is argue. Behind her prickly exterior is a deep seated love for her teammates.

THE REF: Middle aged, and a stickler for the rules, The Ref has been umpiring netball games for over twenty years. As most of The Ref’s dialogue takes place offstage, we are looking for an actor who can both project and articulate well, whilst also keeping the deep seated passive aggression typical of every netball umpire.

PLEASE NOTE: All casting will be race blind. As growing up playing netball is in many ways a very gendered experience, we are looking for actors who have lived experience as a woman. Please feel free to reach out to us if you would like more context for this, or if you would like to discuss this further. Lived experience as a netballer is not necessary.

Preparing for your audition

Please fill in this Google Form to register your interest and indicate what audition times work best for you: https://bit.ly/3mNm7y3

Please prepare a short monologue of your own choice, about two minutes in length. It can be either dramatic or comedic, as our play contains elements of both. You are not required to be off book for your audition, however if you are reading from a script during your audition, we would prefer you to print out the script rather than read off your phone.

Your audition will last no more than 15 minutes. We will begin by having you deliver your own monologue that you have prepared, then we will have you read some cold scenes from the show. We will also be asking you to show us your best horror movie scream, so get those vocal cords ready!

If you have any questions or comments, please contact us at playonsuds@gmail.com

We look forward to hearing from you, and cannot wait for your audition!
