SUDS Mural Opening Ceremony

  • The Cellar Theatre Science Road Camperdown, NSW, 2050 Australia (map)

Been to the Cellar Theatre recently? You might have noticed some very beautiful changes to the facade of our theatre entrance….

Come and join us at 4pm on Tuesday October 24 to celebrate the completion of SUDS’ First Nations Storytelling Mural, painted by Warlpiri/Gamilraay woman and artist, Jessie Waratah. We will be joined by special guests outside the Cellar Theatre when we tell the story of this mural’s creation, and what it represents. At 4:30 we’ll walk up the stairs to Courtyard for refreshments and nibbles. This event is free, but please RSVP here:

Please consider donating to the fund for this mural, a little bit goes a long way! You can donate via the humanitix link above. Thank you for your generosity, and for supporting artists wherever possible.

As a society all about stories and how we choose to tell them, we recognise that we are part of a long canon of oral tradition, Dreaming, and storytelling. In 2023, our Dramatic Society and its many productions exist at the pointy-end of that Australian canon. We acknowledge those who came before us and pay respect to Elders past, present, and emerging. The land on which our theatre stands has, for thousands of years, been a place of learning, knowledge exchange and wellbeing for First Nations people. To celebrate these practices that began on this land thousands of years ago, we would like to welcome everyone into the theatre beneath a mural-painted archway that pays tribute to the traditions of First Nations communities, the custodians of this land. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, and always will be Aboriginal Land.

We can’t wait to see you there. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us here or send us an email at sudsthewash@gmail.com
