Event Details:
Dramatising Queer History is a two-part lecture-workshop series on queer storytelling for stage and screen within the genre of historical drama.
It is a fact that LGBTQIA+ people have always existed, and lived full, exciting and insightful lives. A fact that many have tried to hide by controlling queer depictions in popular history. The current surge of interest in hidden queer histories is set to change that. In this lecture-workshop series, Sam Spring – writer of the Hans Christian Andersen biographic play The Fairy Tale of My Life – aims to equip emerging artists with the knowledge, tools and enthusiasm for writing historical drama with queer narratives.
In the first workshop, Sam will give an overview of the history of this genre and discuss how the lack of opportunities for queer artists has come with real consequences. They will then discuss the current moment’s queer history renaissance, as well as the work that still needs to be done. Sam will examine how the pitfalls of historical drama at large can erase and distort queer existence - both past and present - before reflecting on their own experience writing The Fairy Tale of My Life and discussing the future of queer historical drama.
