SUDS has a new initiative – Foreign Language Plays! This will be a collection of short plays written by students in a foreign language. It’s an opportunity to embrace the linguistic diversity of student theatre in writing, directing, performing and being part of a production team in a number of foreign language pieces!

We encourage people to use this opportunity to direct and experiment in languages other than just English. We hope to be able to create a safe theatre space for people who grew up with different cultural backgrounds. The pieces will be small plays, with the hopes of experimentation, fun and welcoming of new members of SUDS. If you haven’t done a production with us before but want to direct, we strongly encourage you to apply! We will also provide assistance and support throughout the process to ensure you feel comfortable and confident in your pieces. Still unsure? This year, the showcase dedicated to original writing and new members in our society is themed by the harrowing, ponderous, potentially rhetorical question… ‘How Will I Know?’ We’ve had writers tippy-tappy-typing away for the last few months, responding to and building upon this very question. They have created art. They have put pen to paper and finger to keyboard and brought to the table a very inviting array of original pieces. But here’s the gig - not all of them are directing their pieces.

So, this is where YOU come in. We need aspiring (and first-time encouraged!) directors to take these short, original pieces (5-10mins long, roughly 2-4 characters) and work with new SUDS members and make some magic happen. Auditions start in Week 1 of semester (we run those, don’t you worry), and you’ll be rehearsing as of Week 3 with your cast members. You’ll get a month to work with some awesome new SUDSians, directing a short original piece, and your skills will be flaunted in the showcase in Week 7 of semester: ‘How Will I Know?’.

Slot 3 is an awesome opportunity to get your foot in the door. It’s easy-going, low-stress, high-fun student theatre. It’s whacky. It’s deep. It’s SUDS - and it’s for you. Everyone is welcome.
